TDoE V3, Chapter 19

Azrael and Uriel, or Azra and Yuri… The two of them were originally enemies and bickered a lot, even after we were all in the same Clan.  Well, the main reason they fought was because of their different views on ‘technology’.  Azrael loved machines and especially cyberpunk or clockwork shit.  Uriel was always a strong advocate of biotech though.  She was upset that it was basically impossible for the characters in the game to get stronger by undergoing gene therapy but… I mean, seriously, it wasn’t ‘that’ complicated of a game.  What she wanted was just way too difficult, considering that everything mainly relied on mechanical technology anyway.

However, there was eventually a patch to “Technoevo World Online”, which allowed people to create biotech to a certain degree.  One of her favorite things to do was make bullets that infected the targets with parasites or melee weapons that were covered with deadly bacteria and viruses.  Yeah, she was ridiculous, but they both were, so the rest of us got used to it eventually.

The Twin Angels of Death, Azrael and Uriel… As I thought about the two of them, I aimed at my target and murmured “I’m not sure if Yuri died or not though.  If she was here in this world, ugh, I don’t even know what would happen.  Azra is one thing, but that girl is a total sociopath.  Who even knows how many people she would end up killing if she had the opportunity to do some ‘experiments’?  What are the odds of her actually being on the same planet as the two of us though?”  There’s a lot of power in words.  Especially when there are ‘people’ listening to them.

Anyway, I was trying to hit this one guy.  He had a long white fumanchu moustache, with equally long and white hair coming down to his ass.  The dude was just chilling on the wall, waiting for someone to come up and fight him or so I assumed.  Most of the Adepts were either really old or super-young.

Honestly, I didn’t feel particularly great about assassinating some random little girl or boy.  They were barely even teenagers and probably thirteen or fourteen.  I figured that if all the ancient bastards get knocked off, then the kids might be able to survive.  Even if they were sterilized and forced to join the Church of Luna, it would still be better than dying pointlessly.

Sure, there are plenty of brats that manage to murder or rape people and I would be fine with knocking them off, but if their only crime was being enrolled in a school… Slaughtering children who probably haven’t done anything too terrible in their entire lives is really bad Karma.  Di might be a pussy, but there are just some things that should be motherfucking obvious, right?

As that old man stared up at the massive silver sperm whale in the sky, I gently pulled the trigger.  There was a loud *Bang*, but it was nothing compared to Liara’s noisy bow.  Johan was much quieter, even though his weapon was nearly twice as big.  He didn’t use any spells, just pure physical strength and marksmanship.

I hurriedly looked through the monocular and by the time I found that guy, I saw him turn towards my direction and defensively lift his left hand.  However, a bloody hole immediately appeared on his palm and within moments, he fell to his knees.  Vines burst out of his cheek and some of them plunged into his eye socket.  As he was desperately trying to rip his own face off in order to remove that parasitic plant, some douchebag jumped up next to him and plunged a spear through his head.

“Fucking kill-stealing piece of shit!  Goddamn it!” I was seriously pissed off for a second there and almost shot that man in the back, when I remembered “Oh wait… This isn’t a game.  Wow, I might have some serious anger issues, huh?” Among other things…

The ground was constantly rumbling from the chaotic battleground in the distance.  No to mention the various noises we were making.  That violent tornado near the gates was literally sliced in half by a magical sword-strike, somehow.  Well, I know how, but at the time, it seemed really ridiculous.

Raphael was using a massive golden staff to beat the shit out of a beautiful busty woman.  At least, she was really sexy before he started bludgeoning her to death.  When he finished the one-sided ‘fight’, she was nothing but a pile of broken bones and bloody meat.  All of her skin was burnt off and he even ripped her Dantian out, before devouring it.

“Seriously, what the actual fuck… No, no, don’t think about it… Soon it’ll all be over either way, so I might as well help end things faster.” My conscience was shaken a bit when I saw a little boy’s head get blasted into tiny bits by a beam of golden light.  There was also a small loli who was within the courtyard next to him, but she was skewered through the torso by a gigantic ballista-like arrow.  Neither Liara nor Johan seemed to have any qualms about killing children.  Okay, they were teenagers, but still… It bothered me.

You have to remember that I wasn’t a soldier.  Hell, I literally had no formal training at all.  My whole twenty years of life, I had lived in a country where even the military had strict rules of engagement.  I was practically brainwashed by the media and teachers that war was some sort of evil monster, which should be completely eliminated from the universe.  As if that somehow made any kind of sense.

The moral of the story is that I was still relatively weak-minded and naive to a certain extent.  I didn’t quite understand how crazy people were about ‘loyalty’, ‘patriotism’ and ‘revenge’ yet.  It might seem fucked up to massacre even non-combatants and children, but the problem is that those people might not always be insignificant.  If someone murdered my parents and let me live, I definitely wouldn’t just say “Oh hey, don’t worry about it, not a big deal.”

No, I think that most people would do everything in their power to seek vengeance.  Even if they couldn’t do anything personally, because they were too old or whatever, their children and grandchildren might be end up becoming super-overpowered.  Of course, the real problem is that by that time, the actual perpetrator might be dead already.  Yet, their innocent kids or descendants would get blamed for something they had nothing to do with!  That’s how these ancient fucking feuds all started goddamn it!  People keep doing horrible shit to each other because other people they never even met before, did some terrible things back in the olden days!  Nobody even remembers how it all started, but every generation it’s something else and the cycle goes on forever.

The source of all that misery was actually a simple act of mercy, where a soldier who was only following orders, had to kill some ‘rebels’.  That miscellaneous man or woman decided to space the children of those ‘enemies’ and thus, he or she managed to screw over millions or billions of people!

In war, you often need to sacrifice your own morality, in order to prevent a greater tragedy later on.  Of course, the kids might end up growing into awesome people or total nobodies and you might just be building up negative Karma by murdering them.  However, I was way too weak to have to deal with any of that shit yet.

I wasn’t a soldier, or a commander, merely a ten-year old brat who was dumb enough to allow themselves to get dragged onto a battlefield.  Was I even technically a citizen of the Southern Islands?  Who knows?  Well, I verbally agreed to become Queen Hua Jiang’s disciple, so I guess that counted for something…

There really wasn’t much difference between me and a mercenary.  I was mostly working for a profit after all.  Although Di’s house was kind of in the Qing Republic, I never had any real interactions with the people who live over there.  My attachment to that place was practically nonexistent.  The Hua Jiang Palace though; I mean, wouldn’t you want to live in an awesome underwater city?  I definitely would have been upset if I could never go back there again.

Oh well, enough rambling on about philosophy and shit.  While I was searching for my second target, I noticed that a decent amount of the younger generations were retreating back into the main building.  Obviously, they were about to use the secret tunnels in order to escape.  That was all part of the plan though.
