Chapter 2: Ghoulish

“Goddamn it!” The naked, giant Ghoul climbed off the gurney unsteadily. He wasn’t that short before, but now he was over 2 meters tall. Just standing up made his head a little woozy. Though there might be multiple reasons for that.

“Where do we go?!” Danica snapped out of her hunger and went back to ‘fear’, “We’re in a fucking morgue!”

“Hold on. I’m trying to remember…” Josh looked around and pointed towards a certain wall, “There’s a secret escape hatch in the office, probably? Hopefully.”

“Fuck!” Danica cursed as the doors were flung open and dozens of zombies started pouring through at a time! They weren’t slow either! Some of the ones at the front were knocked down and trampled by the ones behind, but there were also monsters crawling up along the walls and bursting down out of the ceiling! 

“Come on! Don’t fight them!” The giant man ran towards the office and easily tossed a zombie into one of the morgue beds.

“Who the fuck is gonna try to fight them?!” Danica stabbed her scalpel through a zombie’s temple, but was pounced on by three more! She lost her fancy white lab coat but managed to escape, rushing after the surprisingly fast Ghoulish man. Even when a few undead were latched onto his legs and trying to hold him down, he just kept moving and ignored them.

“Oh sweet, there really is an exit! Hahaha~!” Joshua pushed the desk out of the way and lifted the metal hatch on the ground, “Come on! Jump down in the mysterious hole! I’m sure it’ll be fine!”

“Fuck~!” She elbowed a zombified woman in the face and dove down into the abyss, then got followed by the hulking monster she created. Fortunately below them was a serene river in the middle of a beautiful forest. Unfortunately, a few dozen zombies also poured down into the river with them…

“Oh shit! Get out of the water! Fuck-fuck-fuck~!” Josh was even more terrified than in the morgue with the zombies!

“Why-aaah!” Danica screamed in pain as a big chunk of flesh was ripped from her back! Not by a zombie, but by… Something she couldn’t even see!

“They’re like transparent piranhas or some shit! Ow!” 

It didn’t take long for the two of them to reach the rocky shore, but the zombies weren’t so lucky. In only a few moments, they were all devoured and the flowing river water washed away the blackened blood, hair and other junk that the fish didn’t devour directly.

“Phew~! So yeah. Welcome to the Forest of Serenity. As I like to call it.” Josh breathed out a long sigh and sat down on the dirt nearby, “If you feel tired, that’s normal.”

“I feel exhausted and like I’m gonna die.” Danica groaned as she reached back and felt the bloody hole on her back where the flesh was missing, “I need blood and a long nap.”

“You do need blood, but if you go to sleep in this place, you’ll never wake up again. Trust me.” He casually pointed towards some deer that were sleeping nearby. They looked so cute and peaceful. There was also a gigantic black octopus-like monster that was also sleeping peacefully next to them. On the other side of the river was an alligator so massive that its back was higher than the trees… It was also sleeping quietly. Even as thousands of gigantic black ants were devouring its ‘living’ body.

“What the fucking fuck?!” She thought that thing was a hill at first, but it was a real animal! 

“Yeah, I know, right? Anyway, you don’t wanna fall asleep here. Doesn’t matter if you’re a human or a monster, as long as you’re not a God, you’ll probably never wake up again. The only creatures that can survive and thrive here are the ones that never sleep.” 

He pointed up at the sky and Danica saw something even more ridiculous. There were gigantic pink jellyfish-like creatures just floating around in the sky. The white clouds had pitch-black ‘eyes’ peering down from inside of them. The blue sky had a massive black ‘slit’ down the center. It became more rounded from time to time, moving, as if focusing on something. Suddenly darkness encroached from above and below. Then the sky became pure white. Snow fell from the sky and was devoured by the jellyfish, clouds and huge swarms of gigantic locusts that emerged from the forests.

“The Forest of Serenity, huh?” Danica groaned and complained, “Can we go back to the zombie hospital again?”

“The Forest of Serenity is actually pretty awesome. There are lots of dangerous monsters everywhere, but that’s just normal around here. The main thing is that you can find a lot of ‘free food’ just lying around.” Josh looked down at his mangled legs and smiled wryly on his stiff face, “Might also be able to find some ‘spare parts’ if we’re lucky.”
